The Fighting News

Two-time world champion Maureen Shea (30-2-1, 13 KOs) returned to her home state of New York for a dominant victory over Calista Silgado (19-14-3). Hers was the featured bout on Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing card held at the Carnesecca Arena in St. John’s University, Jamaica, Queens.

Silgado is a tough, experienced opponent, a former title contender who hung with Shea for eight rounds. She managed to land a few shots, but most of her punches were unable to find their target. Shea’s footwork, head movement and counters were on point all night, showcasing her world-class skills. Shea landed combinations to the body and head of Silgado that were mostly unanswered. Judges scored the bout 79-73, 79-73, and 77-75.

In 2020 Shea was on track to challenge for the WBA bantamweight title until Covid-19 put an end to her plans. But perhaps that was a blessing in disguise. Propelled by fan favorites Ebanie Bridges, Amanda Serrano, Katie Taylor, and others, the women are in the spotlight now. And the bantamweight division is in desperate need of a unified champion. Maureen “The Real Million Dollar Baby” Shea would be a welcome contender.

Current bantamweight belt holders include Yulihan Luna (WBC), with whom Shea battled to a ten-round controversial draw in 2015 on the undercard of Shane Mosley vs. Ricardo Mayorga,  Ebanie Bridges (IBF), Jamie Mitchell (WBA), and Dina Thorslund (WBO).

Maureen Shea is based in Boca Raton, Florida and trains with Derik Santos and Phil Daru.
