Most fans know Ulysses “Uly the Monster” Diaz (12-1, 11 KOs) for his many spectacular knockouts in the boxing ring. Few people know of his background as a member of Pitbull’s security detail. The Fighting News saw The Monster’s first fight in the USA when he was a 4-0 cruiserweight back in June 2017 at The Deauville Beach Resort in Miami, Uly’s own stomping grounds. Also in attendance was YouTube Star and Bellator Competitor Dada 5000, a personal friend of his.
Now, at age 38, Uly is going to make his professional MMA debut on December 20th with the prestigious Titan FC. We caught up with Uly this evening and he answered the question that has been on many of our minds: Why? Why the move to MMA when you just won the NBA Intercontinental Belt and your boxing career is taking off?
Uly’s answer was remarkable: to challenge himself. Having worked through several injuries and becoming an accomplished boxer, Uly says he simply wants to show that anything is possible at any age. So Uly, who trains his boxing with Orlando Cuellar, who has trained the likes of Glen Johnson and Antonio Carver, is now honing his MMA skills with Yoel Romero and Mike Trujillo at American Top Team in Miami. He will then soon return to boxing, as he must defend his NBA title within the next 6 months.
The decision to make his pro MMA debut with Titan FC was an easy one. Titan Chief Operating Officer Lex McMahon is well known for treating his fighters with fairness and respect and Uly compares his positive experiences with McMahon to those with Henry Rivalta of The Heavyweight Factory, the banner he’s fought under for several years now. “Lex and Henry are both stand-up guys, we talk like gentlemen and are honest with each other…”
We look forward to December 20th at Xtreme Action Park in Ft. Lauderdale for Titan FC 56.
