The Fighting News caught up with Lawrence BT Newton, who is getting ready for his June 24th bout on Warrior Boxing’s “Night of the Rising Stars 2” card at the famous Deauville Beach Resort in Miami, and his promises to be a fight to remember. A South Florida native, bantamweight Newton (7-0 with 5 KOs), who recently turned 21 years of age-recently, as in yesterday- has been boxing since the tender age of 8 when his father (and later, coach), took BT down to the Boca Police Athletic League to teach him a lesson about staying out of trouble. Instead of being intimidated, BT felt the pull of competition and told himself that this was the place he wanted to be. So he began training, and never looked back. After a ten-year old handed the young BT his first taste of defeat in a sparring match, tears were shed but quickly abandoned and determination grew. It would take another five years of training until BT caught up to his sparring partner and was able to hand him an L, but during that time, BT was already making a name for himself on the local scene, competing in the Sunshine State Games and including several matches against Teofimo Lopez.
BT brings an impressive skillset: composed and comfortable in the ring, with fast hands, good footwork, the ability to switch leads and connect at different angles. We look forward to June 24th!
