Scott Quigg (34-1-2, 25 KOs), the former Jr. Featherweight Champion, who is slated to meet up with WBO Featherweight Champion, Oscar Valdez, on Saturday night, failed to make weight at Friday night’s weigh-in. Actually, it wasn’t even close, as Quigg came in weighing 128.8 pounds, 2.8 pounds over the Featherweight limit. Quigg held the title of Jr. Featherweight Champion for three years, from 2013-2016, when his only career loss came by split decision at the hands of former 2-division champ, Carl Frampton, in their unification bout, on what was deemed The Fight of the Year of 2016. Having had 3 consecutive wins since the loss to Frampton, Quigg has been attempting to reascend the boxing ladder of greatness, this time in the Featherweight Division, and was very much looking forward to this great match-up against Valdes in his attempt to, once again, become a World Champion. The fight will go on as planned, but Quigg cannot obtain the belt should he get the win. He has also been penalized 20% of his purse for the fight, with half of the money going to the Boxing Commission & the other half going directly to Valdes for deciding to continue with the fight, even when he has the right to walk away. This is no doubt a huge wrinkle in Quigg’s “return to fame”.
