Reported by Michael Feinberg & Steven Rothman
On Saturday, Shannon Briggs (56-6-1, 49 KOs) beat Cory Phelps (16-7-1, 8 KOs) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina by 1st Round TKO in a low-profile heavyweight contest. This is the fifth straight fight on Briggs’ so-called “comeback trail” and the fifth win by either TKO or KO. Our own Steven Rothman recently interviewed Shannon, who told us that he was looking to reclaim at least a piece of the Heavyweight Championship within the next 18 months. Briggs, the current NABA Heavyweight Champion, has called out Wladimir Klitschko, stating that Klitschko has been ducking him for years and needs to face him before his career is over. This reporter is unsure whether we will see that contest anytime in the near future but has another match-up in mind. How exciting would it be to see Briggs square off against the winner of Bermane Stiverne and Deontay Wilder for the current WBC Heavyweight Championship? Of course, the match-up between Stiverne and Wilder would first need to take place, and there has not yet been talk of this fight. While waiting on this type of match-up, why not put Briggs into the ring with another former titllist to see who still has the “eye of the tiger”? Another great opponent for Shannon could be former WBA Champion Ruslan Chagaev, whose only two losses came at the hands of Wladimir Klitschko and Alexander Povetkin. Chagaev, known as White Tyson, holds a record of 33-2-1 (20 KOs). With several current and former champions active in this division, many great fights could be made. Why not throw Shannon Briggs into that mix and see who rises to the top?
LETS GO CHAMP !!!!!
