New York: Steve Rolls was a tough, formidable opponent…for about 10 mins. Gennady Golovkin (39-1, 35 KOs) had just come off of the second-longest layoff of his career heading into Saturday’s fight. He appeared slightly trepidatious after a nine-month layoff following his lone loss. After three rounds of shaking off the cobwebs and removing the rust, however, fight fans began seeing the grit of Golovkin they have come to know and expect. Shortly after the fourth round was underway, GGG finally found his groove. After the two fighters began trading shots while spinning all around the ring, Golovkin began getting the better of Rolls. GGG found a sweet spot, as he reached around the guard of Rolls and landed a perfectly placed left hook to the right temple. Rolls (19-1, 10 KOs) then landed face first onto the canvas. Rolls’s attempt to beat the count was unsuccessful, and GGG earned himself another KO win.
When speaking to Gennady post-fight, his comments were clear, concise, and direct. He wants to complete that trilogy with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (52-1, 35 KOs). And, why not? Many fight fans would like to see that happen. This is the opinion of this reporter: I would like to see Canelo fight the likes of Jarmall Charlo (28-0, 21 KOs) or another high-profile middleweight not currently holding a belt. While that happens, I would like to see WBO Middleweight Champion, Demetrius Andrade (27-0, 17 KOs), get a definitive win in his upcoming title defense against Maciej Sulecki (28-1, 11 KOs) on June 29th and then face a bigger name in the division. Let’s then see the GGG-Alvarez III fight with the winner taking on Andrade for his WBO belt to unify them all (should each fighter still have his). This is what should be happening in boxing. This is what makes sense. This is what the fans want to see!
