Los Angeles, CA: Canelo Alvarez has filed a lawsuit against both international streaming service, DAZN, and his boxing promotional company, Golden Boy Promotions, for the remaining $280M left on his contract. The lawsuit, which also demands payment for punitive damages and legal fees, claims a breach of contract from the two parties. The pandemic has obviously created a massive issue as it relates to earning revenue with high-profile fights and having the opportunity to place fans in the stands. Clearly, certain fighters don’t care about others’ financial concerns and cannot handle a delay or decrease in pay, even when that payment is a minimum of $70M annually. Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) has not fought since his eleventh round knockout of former three-time unified Light Heavyweight Champion, Sergey Kovalev (34-4-1, 29 KOs) back in November 2019. Undoubtedly, the presence of this lawsuit will now delay his immediate return to the ring, which was planned before the end of 2020.
