Boxer Dies From Injuries

Washington, D.C.:  Maxim Dadashev has died.  Previously unbeaten at 13-0 with 11 KOs, “Mad Max” was recently featured on ESPN+ in the co-main event promoted by Top Rank.  The fight card took place this past Friday night at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland.  The Saint Petersburg, Russia native was taking on Subriel Matias (14-0, 14 KOs) during an IBF Junior Welterweight World Title Eliminator.

Maxim put up a great fight until the later part of the bout.  This is when Matias began landing dozens of clean, powerful headshots.  Dadashev stayed on his feet, responding with a shot or two of his own.  Due to his appearance and counter-punching, those in and around the ring did not see reason to stop the contest.  However, near the end of Round 10 and throughout Round 11, Dadashev really took some serious punishment.  Between Rounds 11 and 12, his trainer, 2019 International Boxing Hall of Fame Inductee, James “Buddy” McGirt stepped in and stopped the fight.  This was much to the chagrin of Dadashev, who voiced his opinion the fight continue.  McGirt wanted to hear none of it and made the decision despite Dadashev’s argument.

Moments after Matias was announced the winner by TKO victory, Dadashev and his team began making their way out of the ring.  However, “Mad Max” didn’t get very far before he began feeling faint and needed to sit down on the edge of the apron outside of the ring.  Two of his handlers attempted to walk him to the nearby medics, but they didn’t get very far.  The gurney needed to be brought over to Dadashev.  On the way to the hospital, Dadashev lost consciousness in the ambulance.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Maxim was placed into a medically-induced coma, as there were signs of a brain bleed.  Surgery was imminent.  After two hours of surgery in the early Saturday hours, Dadashev remained in that coma in the hopes the brain swelling would begin to subside.  Less than 72 hours later, Dadashev passed away, never having become conscious since his Friday night ambulance ride.  It was determined the injuries sustained, which included a subdural hematoma on the left side of his head, were just too much from which to recover.  Maxim Dadashev was 28.

We here at The Fighting News offer our deepest condolences to Dadashev’s family and team.  May he rest in peace.
