In amazing fashion, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, Sergey Kovalev, a 2-time Light Heavyweight Champion, has been knocked out. Sergey got off to a fast start and was up on the scorecards 58-56, 59-55, 59-55. Eleider Alvarez, an undefeated prospect, has now taken the baton, as he knocked down Kovalev three times in the seventh round en route to a stoppage by referee David Fields. The first knockdown came after Alvarez landed a devastating right hook to the left temple of Kovalev, which wobbled the champion, as he fell to the canvas on his bottom. That would be a shot from which Kovalev would not be able to recover. So, in comes Eleider Alvarez (24-0, 12 KOs), the new WBO Light Heavyweight Champion of the World. Although commentators were all quick to dismiss Kovalev by stating he is “done”, this reporter finds himself scratching his head, asking, “What about the rematch clause?”
