Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) has tested positive for the banned substance, clenbuterol, in a recent drug test ahead of his Middleweight Megafight against Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs). Clenbuterol is a drug designed to be used by asthmatics but has long been linked to having been used by steroid users as a fat-burning tool to produce lean muscle mass. Follow-up tests for Alvarez have come up negative since the originally-failed test, so the fight will go on as planned on Saturday, May 5th in Las Vegas. This reporter is unsure if anything could possibly put a halt to the fight many are figuring to be “The Fight of the Century”. This fight is a rematch between the two champions. In their first fight, boxing fans all around the world were treated to some of the best rounds of boxing action they have seen in many years, especially in the (once-again exciting) Middleweight Division. The result of that fight was a very highly controversial draw, which caused a boxing official to be suspended for an undetermined period of time. Golovkin has recently come out publicly by saying that this failed drug test is just simply “bad for the sport”.
